How to Make Vanilla Chai Latte?

With a prep time of just 10 minutes and a cook time of 15 minutes, this Vanilla Chai Latte recipe yields either 2 servings of 12 ounces each or 4 servings of 6 ounces each.

Follow these easy steps to make your own delicious vanilla chai latte.

  1. Pour 3 cups of whole milk into a large skillet and set the heat to slightly less than medium. The milk should become very warm but not scald. Aim for a temperature between medium and medium-low.
  2. Place 2 tablespoons of cardamom pods, 1 tablespoon of whole allspice, and 1 tablespoon of whole cloves in a plastic bag. Place the bag on a cutting board and gently pound on the spices with a meat mallet or rolling pin until they crack open. They should remain mostly whole but slightly opened up.
  3. Add the cracked spices, 5-6 whole star anise, 3-4 cinnamon sticks (each about 2 inches long), a 2-inch piece of fresh ginger (peeled and chopped), 1 teaspoon of real vanilla extract, and 2-3 tablespoons of honey (adjust to your taste) to the skillet with the warm milk. Stir everything to combine.
  4. Simmer the mixture for about 5-6 minutes, until the milk is very warm and fragrant from the spices.
  5. Add 3 black tea bags (preferably organic) to the skillet and let them brew in the spiced milk for another 5 minutes.
  6. Remove the skillet from the heat and take out the tea bags, squeezing them gently to release as much flavor as possible. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl, reserving the liquid and discarding the solids.
  7. Divide two-thirds of the strained liquid between individual serving mugs and set aside. Pour the remaining third of the mixture into a blender and blend on high for 1-2 minutes until a nice foam develops. Make sure the blender cap is properly vented to prevent the hot liquid from causing an explosion.
  8. Pour the blended, frothy liquid into the serving mugs, topping each with a big spoonful of foam. If desired, sprinkle ground cinnamon on top and garnish with a whole star anise.
  9. Serve your Vanilla Chai Latte immediately and enjoy the warm, comforting flavors!

Tips For Making This Recipe

Here are some helpful tips for making the Vanilla Chai Latte:

  • Temperature Control: Keep the heat slightly below medium when warming the milk to avoid scalding. The milk should be very warm but not boiling.
  • Cracking Spices: Use a meat mallet or rolling pin to gently crack the whole spices. This releases their flavors without turning them into powder.
  • Straining the Mixture: Use a fine mesh strainer to remove all the spices and tea solids from the mixture for a smooth latte.
  • Milk Alternatives: Feel free to experiment with different types of milk, such as coconut or almond milk, but be aware that these will alter the flavor of the final drink.
  • Using Fresh Spices: Whenever possible, use fresh whole spices for the best flavor. If you can’t find them locally, they can be purchased online.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there coffee in a vanilla chai latte?

There is no coffee in a Vanilla Chai Latte. A traditional Vanilla Chai Latte is made with black tea as its base, not coffee. It does not contain coffee because it is based on the traditional Indian beverage known as masala chai, which is made using black tea and a blend of spices. The absence of coffee aligns with the cultural origins and intended flavor profile of the drink.

Can I use a pre-made chai mix for a vanilla chai latte?

You can use a pre-made chai mix for a vanilla chai latte. Using a pre-made chai mix streamlines the process of making a vanilla chai latte by providing a ready-to-use blend of spices and tea. This eliminates the need to source and measure individual ingredients like cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, and black tea leaves.

What fruit goes with vanilla chai?

Vanilla chai latte pairs well with a variety of fruits like apples, pears, berries, citrus fruits, and dried fruits. They can be served alongside vanilla chai tea, incorporated into desserts, or used as toppings for baked goods. Chai tea features a fragrant blend of brewed black tea and warm spiced milk. Here, the tea bags are steeped directly in warm milk, rather than water, for a rich and satisfying treat. If preferred, you can also brew the tea first in one cup of hot water and stir it into two cups of warm, spiced milk before serving.

Although whole milk is used here, you can use your choice of milk, a combination of milk and heavy cream, or plant-based alternatives such as coconut or almond milk. However, be advised the plant-based alternatives will impact the final taste.

Notes

Some chai latte recipes recommend ground spices rather than the cracked whole spices as described here. Although ground spices are a bit easier to use, they can leave an unpleasant gritty residue behind even after straining.

If you can’t find the whole spices in your local grocery store, you can find them online. For example, you can purchase the cardamom pods here: https://amzn.to/3dxsFt9
