Tips to Form and Maintain a Strong Family
Below are four tips to help you form and maintain a strong family bond.
Open And Honest Communication
The foundation of any strong family is open and honest communication. You want your kids to be able to talk to you about anything, but you’ve got to teach them that this is okay. If you blow up every time they tell you something then this is going to deter them from doing so in the future.
You wouldn’t want to tell someone that you made a mistake or you’ve done something bad if you knew they were going to shout at you and make you feel bad, would you? So why would you do this to your kids?
There are ways to punish kids when necessary without screaming, shouting, and belittling. If they made a mistake then you need to calmly explain to them and help them avoid making it again.
If they did something bad, then you need to remain calm, thank them for telling you, and explain that actions have consequences so now they are in trouble, but because they were honest the punishment is less severe.
One Meal Per Day Together
At the very least, you need to be eating one meal per day as a family. It doesn’t matter if this is breakfast or dinner, but you have got to find the time to do this. You can use this as a chance to catch up about the day that’s happened or the day that happened yesterday.
You need to be actively involved in the life of your family, but this can only happen if you know what is going on. Eating a meal together ensures that you have the time to talk that you need, and it strengthens that bond as you are all together.
Family Nights
It’s also a good idea to implement family nights either once or twice per week. Sometimes it can be tough if you have older kids because you’re not sure about their schedule, but if you keep this consistent then they will know not to make plans on family nights.
These can include playing games, watching kids beach movies or whatever movie you guys want to watch, and so much more. Sometimes you may want to go out, other times you may want to stay in, but it’s just about being together.
There are families who don’t have family nights, and they will be some of the most disconnected people that you will meet. Busy is not an excuse, so remember that.
Be Affectionate And Show Up
Finally, you should be affectionate with your family and show up when they need you. If your kids have a sports match, show up. If they have a music event, show up.
If they want to take you to one of their hobbies, show up. This is the most important thing that you can do for your kids especially, as they need to know that they can always count on you to be there when they need you.
Ensure that you are giving them lots of hugs, as there have been studies conducted that show these have massive impacts on the body.
It reduces stress levels, encourages serotonin production and so much more, meaning that hugs will literally make you happier.
Forming and maintaining a strong family bond is going to be important if you want a successful family life. We know that it’s easy to let yourself get occupied by other things in life and completely lose sight of the fact that your family needs you, but it doesn’t make it any less true.
