How to Make Rump Roast in the Crock Pot

Here are the ingredients you’ll need for the crock pot roast:

ingredients for crock pot roast
  • 3 lbs roast (any kind – we usually use rump roast, but you can use another cut if you prefer)
  • 1 lb baby red potatoes – you can also cut large potatoes into chunks if you don’t have baby potatoes
  • 1 onion, cut into chunks – a sweet yellow onion works great
  • 3 cups beef stock or beef broth
  • 6 oz beer – any kind you like
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper

Add the roast to the crockpot. Place it fat-side up if you’re using a rump roast. Place potatoes, carrots & onion around the roast. Pour in the beef stock and beer. Sprinkle in salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook on low for 8 hours.

How to Make the Gravy for the Roast

After the roast is fully cooked, take 2 cups of liquid from the crockpot and pour it into a saucepan. Whisk in the water and cornstarch in with the roast juice to make gravy. Bring to a boil, stirring frequently for 3-5 minutes until it begins to thicken. It will thicken as it cools as well. Drizzle the gravy over the roast, carrots, and potatoes, and enjoy!

Will a Rump Roast Get Tender?

For a roast to get tender, it needs to cook for the appropriate amount of time. Cutting the roast into smaller pieces and cooking it in liquid can help to make sure that it’s cooked through. The temperature should also be set at low or slow and may need to be left to cook for at least five hours or more, depending on how big the roast is.

Is a Rump Roast Good for Slow Cooking?

A rump roast is a good choice for slow cooking because it’s a cut of meat that includes a lot of both collagen and muscle fibers. It is lower in fat than other cuts of meat, so it can be tough unless it’s cooked low and slow for a long time.

Do You Cook a Rump Roast Fat Side Up or Down?

Rump roast should be cooked with the fat side up. The fat melts as the roast cooks, allowing that moisture and flavor to drip down to the rest of the meat. This greatly improves the flavor and texture of a rump roast, or any roast, for that matter.

Why Is Crockpot Roast Tough?

Your Crockpot roast should not be tough. If it is, it’s probably because you haven’t cooked it long enough. Pop it back into the slow cooker for a while, and add a little more liquid, if necessary. You’ll know it’s ready when you can easily pull it apart with a fork.

Does a Rump Roast Shred?

A rump roast should be able to easily shred. To do so, just grab a couple of forks, and pull the meat apart. You can also use your hands once the meat has cooled. This shredded roast is great for tacos, salad toppings, adding to soups, and so much more!
